The Hotel El Convento in San Juan used to be a place where nuns stayed, but they have since turned that into a hotel. The is a 5-star deluxe hotel with an all-inclusive package. They have excellent food and service but are very pricy starting at around $400 per night. I think the best way to see Puerto Rico is to use their government regulated bed-and-breakfast system so you don't have to worry about being ripped off. You can find that information at www.paradores.com
There are a couple of properties on the east coast of Puerto Rico with casinos. If you want to get away from people and phones and TV to have your own little private pool, you could hole up for a week and have nothing but that gorgeous ocean in your view. In November through March, you can even see the whales just off shore. I love it.
Puerto Rico also has your name brand hotels and resorts like the Hilton, Hyatt, Radisson, and Marriott. I once stayed at the Ritz Carlton. It was very impressive, but the room service was horribly expensive. We paid about $25 for a hamburger because our flight was delayed and nothing else was open.
