There are huge buildings built along the canals, not independent houses on a plot of land like we have in most of America. The buildings are stone concrete structures.
Another thing that caught my attention were the clothes lines draped across the canals building to building because they don't have a backyard and trees to put a clothesline on. They literally pull the clothes back to them by turning the pulleys.
They have a lot of apartments, but they also have individual houses. When you take the night tours and the lights are on in these houses you can see people sitting at their dining room table and really see how people are living.
