Preparedness for a hurricane including information on the supplies that you should have on hand to weather the storm.
If you live in a coastal area, you may be prone to hurricanes. Hurricanes should not be taken lightly as they have caused many losses over the years especially to those who have not heeded hurricane warnings or who have not prepared for their arrival.
One of the most important things to remember if a hurricane is approaching your home is not to panic. A calm and logical demeanor is best to have so that you can properly prepare for the hurricane's arrival. Because evacuation may be necessary, know beforehand the safest evacuation route away from the coast, approximately 25-50 miles inland. Additionally, make sure that you have the following supplies on hand: flashlight, batteries, first-aid kit and any personal medications/prescriptions needed, bottled water, food, clothing, and cash. You should also make sure that your car has a full tank of gas in it. When a hurricane is approaching, it is also important that you monitor its progress before, during, and after its arrival. Therefore, you should also have access to a portable, battery-operated television or radio.
If your home is in the path of a hurricane, there are also some actions that you should take to prepare it for the storm. Make sure that all outdoor items, which cannot be brought into the home, are securely fastened outside. If you own a boat, either secure it or move it to another, safer area. Protect your house's windows by closing any hurricane shutters present and/or board-up any windows with plywood. Inside your home, move any breakable items to a safe storage place and remove any items, which can be damaged due to flooding, from the ground floor to a higher level in your home. Also remember to move any important documents stored in your home to a waterproof container.
If you are told to evacuate your home, do so promptly. However, before you go unplug all appliances and shut off the main water valve in your home as well as the electricity. Lock your house securely and follow the directions of your local police or emergency management authorities for a safe evacuation out of the area. Although you cannot stop a hurricane's arrival, if you follow these guidelines at least you will be prepared for it.
