The one that most people probably associate with hypnosis is one that isn't being used too often anymore. It's called aversion, and it's where somebody would be hypnotized into thinking there were bugs in their cookies or something. That type of negative suggestion is still being used, but it's not very common among therapists who have been educated within last 15 years.

The type that we use today is called psycholinguistics, or the language of the mind. It's based on the technique that your mind has a way of communicating. We teach you how to use hypnosis to disassociate from your problem, to re-associate with the behavior that would best help you to reach that goal, and we do this through visualization relaxation techniques. There is a series of over 100 techniques that could be used by a qualified hypnotist to get the results you want. We use positive changes in helping a person set goals on the unconscious level, and then we let the unseen force of the mind find a way to get there. Some people might consider putting somebody into relaxation as a hypnosis technique, but that's an induction technique.

The third type is very useful. We use a machine with light and sound to produce what's called a frequency modeling response. While the client has their eyes closed, flashing light and a tone of bi-neural frequency goes into their ears. That light and sound actually trains the brain to move from a state of wide awake consciousness called beta into a state of alpha and theta where hypnosis occurs. It also keeps them from going into a state of delta which is a deep sleep.
