Ideas For Children's Halloween Costumes

Ideas on how to make NO-SEW Halloween costumes.

What do think of when you hear "Halloween costumes" for kids? Do you think of a pirate, or a ghost, a witch or a vampire? Are you tired of the same old thing? Would you like some new ideas? Here are a few.

-A goldfish

-A cluster of grapes

-A pencil

-A birthday present

Important things to remember about any of theses costume are

-there are no patterns. You will have to create, design, draw or trace.

-measurements will depend on the size of the child

- Safety first. Make sure the child can walk without tripping. Make sure it is loose enough to wear warm clothing underneath . Remember if the costume is made of paper or paper products that they are flammable.

You will need:

Purple leotard and tights or a purple sweatshirt and pants

A green stocking cap

Silk or plastic grape leaves

2-3 dozen purple balloons ( the eleven inch in diameter Helium type balloons are best).

2-3 dozen safety pins

Fabric glue or a hot glue gun and glue

Blow up the balloons and tie them off. Attach the safety pins to the little stub after tieing off and pin it to the leotard or sweatshirt. As you pin the balloons on, imagine a triangle from the shoulders to just above the knees. Do not pin the balloons on the arms.

Attach leaves to the stocking cap with glue or pins.

You are ready to go trick or treating.

You will need:

A box approximately 12" x 17" x 24"

Wrapping paper of your choice

Embellishments such as ribbons, bows, gift tags

Scotch tape

Center a hole in the top of the box. The hole should be approximately 8 inches in diameter. Cut out the hole for the head. Center two holes in the sides of the box for the arms. These should be approximately five inches in diameter. Cut them out.

Cover the box with the paper of your choice. Tape as you would if you were wrapping any other present. Add bows and ribbons . Attach a gift tag.

Have fun

You will need:

A red or orange hooded sweatshirt and pants

One square yard of orange felt

One yard each-yellow satin, multicolored metallic fabric, gold metallic fabric

Fabric glue or hot glue gun and glue

A roll or sheets of laminate to cover three yards of fabric

One square of felt each black and white.

For the fins:

Cut out four equal sized fish fins from the orange felt. These are roughly a teardrop shape. Best way to judge is to look at picture of a fish and copy. I suggest to cut shape out of paper first to get the correct size and shape desired. Glue one piece to another so you have two double thickness fins. Glue one to each shoulder of the sweatshirt

Next cut out the tail fin to cover the back of the sweatshirt to just above the child's feet.

Cut scalloped edges into three rows of the yellow satin. Cut five scalloped rows of the multicolored fabric and cut three rows of the gold metallic fabric. Glue these rows to the back of the fish tail. Glue the scale-covered fishtail to the back of the sweatshirt. Cut more scalloped shapes and glue them to the front of the sweatshirt.

For the eyes

Cut out two circles of white felt 2-3 inches in diameter and cut two circles out of black felt 1-2 inches in diameter. Glue the black to the white circles twice for the 2 eyes then glue these to either side of the hood on the sweatshirt.
