They made it a much more visual medium. If artists wanted to have success through videos, then they had to make clips of their singles to expose them to the television market. It made it where artists had to look a certain way and the superficiality of their image was much more important than before. Eventually the radio wasn't as important as it was in the 60s. It's like that song "Video Killed the Radio Star;" well that I guess happened. Artists had to really get behind that medium if they wanted to really break through. At first artists were making all sorts of interesting art films for their songs, but then as it grew year by year in the early 80s it became less about little short films and more like a three minute commercial for their songs. It got less interesting, less creative and more like marketing infomercials.
