It can take a long time to plan a vacation. First, you have to decide where you want to go. Then, you have to do the research to find the best deals. Should you go with a rental agency? Should you do the booking yourself? How can you save the most money?
Will Mello, owner of Online Vacations, a website where homeowners advertise their vacation properties, gives us some important vacation tips that will ease your mind.
"I see a lot of families making their vacation more stressful than it has to be. Sometimes you don't need a plan, you just need to relax and have fun. I've seen articles that give steps to a stress-free family vacation and they say don't overbook yourself. It is very easy to do, because when you are in a strange area driving from one end of the beach to the other end of the beach can take longer than you think. They are already stressing themselves out because the museum is going to close or the aquarium is going to close. People take their city life and they live with it on vacation too," Mello says.
Here are some ways you can make your vacation more enjoyable: Don't be in a rush. Have a least one day where you don't have anything planned. Change your schedule. Be flexible and as new opportunities arise, go with the flow. Everyone doesn't have to do the same activity. Maybe you want to go skiing, but the rest of your family wants to go to the arcade. Allow yourself to get your fill, and as long as your children are being supervised by your spouse or another adult, all will be fine. Don't argue. Make a pact that no one is allowed to argue with anyone. When someone starts up, you can interject with, "you're breaking the big vacation rule." Do this repeatedly and watch how everyone will calm down. Stress to everyone that the vacation is about having a great time, and if they are not having fun, explore new idea to make it fun.
Besides the emotional level of a vacation, other tips on vacationing are having maps available in your rental car, an unlimited supply of snacks, and knowing the amount of times you want to eat out per day. You may decide you want to cook all your meals at home, and just go out for supper. Make a plan and stick to it. This will keep you and your family from getting stressed out.
Mello says a vacation should be about escaping from the everyday routine of life. We can't escape during the year, because we're stuck at our jobs, school, or other activities. A vacation is an opportunity for the family to get away, bond, and enjoy being around each other. Mello says that's all people have to remember. As long as you go into a vacation with that frame of mind, there is nothing that can upset your planned vacation.
