Skin infections can usually be prevented by avoiding contact with an infected person or even an object. The various germs will cause varied skin disorders. Bacteria can cause an outbreak of boils which are hard, red lumps that are tender to the touch and are caused by an infected hair follicle. If you leave a boil alone it will usually burst in about two weeks. You can apply hot, wet compressed to the boil every few hours to relieve pain and encourage bursting. Never pinch or mash a boil as it will spread the infection.

Impetigo is also a skin infection that is caused by bacteria and is characterized by small blisters that form yellow crusts. This infection can spread very easily and enters the body through breaks in the skin. Wash the area several times a day, and this will soak off any crusts.



Warts are caused by a virus. Teenagers will get warts most of all. They will usually disappear after several months.

There are also fungal infections which can result in ringworms that show red, scaly, round patches. This is not serious and easily treated. Athlete's foot is an irritating and often painful fungus infection that occurs between the toes and the skin becomes red, itchy and flaky. Using an antifungal ointment and wearing cotton socks usually ends this infection of the skin.

Acne occurs mostly in teenagers and is a natural

development due to body changes during these years. Blackheads, whiteheads, and pimples are referred to as acne. If the acne is very mild just keeping the skin clean will help using a face cloth and warm water. Naturally if the acne is severe you will need to consult a dermatologist.

Dermatitis is a skin condition from many different causes. An allergy can occur which is a reaction of the body to an irritating substance such as dust, plants, animals or pollen. Eczema is a swelling and redness of the skin that can include itching and blisters and is usually caused by an allergic reaction. Hives are bumps on the surface of the skin, usually caused by an allergic reaction to food or medicine. Stress can cause hives. Your dermatologist can prescribe medicines to relive the intense itching. Dermatitis can be caused when an irritating or harsh substance touches the skin. This is called contact dermatitis and is usually caused by clothing, perfumes, hair dyes, makeup, or detergents. Poison ivy rash is a form of contact dermatitis and itching and burning will occur. Usually this rash will disappear within three weeks.

Dandruff is small flakes of dead skin from the scalp. This can be caused by mild forms of skin diseases such as eczema or psoriasis, and is usually not serious. Antidandruff shampoo usually helps to rid dandruff. Lice can infect the scalp causing it to itch, you will need a special medicated shampoo or treatment for lice to rid yourself of these tiny animals.
