Volunteering work is a rewarding way to share your time. There are benefits to giving yourself. From gaining valuable life experience to enjoying the rewards of a job.
Giving of one's self can be one of the most rewarding experiences in life. By doing so, you affect the lives of others, your community, your country, and the world. The opportunities to help make someone else's life more meaningful are limitless. A plethora of nonprofit agencies are out there with great need of volunteers. They work to feed the hungry, provide housing to the homeless, provide assistance in times of disaster, and do many other wonderful things that give heart to our beliefs that everyone should have a fair chance. From helping women leave abusive relationships, to providing hospice and relief care for those with dying loved ones, the opportunities now abound for us to be able to make America a better place.
Many people believe that in order to help any of the non-profit agencies, you should donate money. While funds certainly are helping a worthy cause, you do not have to be a wealthy millionaire to help out. You may not have available monies to transfer into charitable works, but you have a much more valuable commodity -- yourself and your time. Giving does not always have to be a matter of money. If we can volunteer our time, we then are better able to give more of ourselves as we contribute our experience, our insight and our ideas to the multiple worthy causes that are crying out for assistance.
So many opportunities to share are available. You can volunteer to serve on your local school board. Don't want to enter into a political arena? Work with the children! Schools are crying out for folks to share their life's experience in the schoolroom. You don't have to have a teaching certificate to bring about changes in a child's life. Help organize a group to clean up the parks and/or playgrounds in your community.
Volunteering your time also does more than benefit those who you are trying to help. You may reap many benefits from the good deeds yourself. Are you looking to start a career or to change jobs? Volunteering is a wonderful way to explore possible career options. It provides you the chance to be in a new work field without making a long-term commitment to it. This also you a chance to discover whether or not you like the work -- and if it's not for you, you can move on. For new graduates, volunteering can show prospective employers that you have practical skills, can function in a particular work environment, and that you care about your community.
Volunteering can be a way to bring out those long desired fantasies you have. Have you always wanted to work with the theater? There are many community groups that would welcome you for a variety of positions from acting or singing to scheduling appointments, or working with the stage or scenery. Do you have a great love for animals? Volunteer for your local humane society or zoo.
Finally, get your entire family involved. Make it a family project. In today's hectic world, it can be difficult to find the quality time that we would like to share with our family. What better way to teach our children basic values and morals than by letting them see them in action in our daily lives? Take one night a month and spend some time in a local soup kitchen or shelter serving a meal with your family. This teaches your children how important it is to try to make life meaningful for others. You will be building a foundation that will last for their lifetimes.
