One of the best details about day spas is their wide range of services and treatments. For most, when they think of the services that are provided at a day spa, treatments such as manicures, pedicures and massages are usually what come to mind. But as times continue to change and the way that many view the time they spend in a day spa also changes too, many are finding that day spas can be beneficial in several other ways.

The main premise of most day spas has always circled around the beautification and relaxation of the body. But over the years, many day spas have expanded to include services that help to maintain the health of many of its customers. A few services that day spas provide that help with certain body issues revolve around the treatment rooms they have. Two of the more popular rooms that most day spas are equipped with include the caldarium and inhalation rooms.

Victoria Boscarino is a licensed massage therapist who has been involved in day spas for more than 10 years now. She currently is the manager and director of Amadeus Spas for the Napa Valley Marriott Hotel and Spa in Napa, California. Boscarino said that the caldarium is nothing more than what we all know as the sauna.

"Caldarium it is actually a fancy Roman word for a heated room," she said. "In the old days they would have rooms heated by fire and coals. By adding cold water to the coals you can create steam, almost like a sauna today."

"A sauna is usually dry heat, and next to it in one corner of the sauna there is usually something like a stove that generates heat," Boscarino added. "By adding a bowl of water to a particular heating component you basically make steam. So a caldarium is just an old word for what is now known as sauna or steam room."

Boscarino said that the caldarium or heated room helps the body by producing sweat. Sweat is vital in helping to release toxins from your body.

"A heated environment promotes sweat production," Boscarino said. "That's why exercise is good for you. It promotes circulation and sweating therefore eliminating toxins through your body rather than just through urine. You want to drink a lot of water to aid your liver and your kidneys in elimination. Sweating is great for reducing inflammation and for joint pain as well as for relaxing the muscles."

The inhalation room is similar to a sauna except that it uses eucalyptus leaves. The inhalation room is best for spa goers that are looking for ways to clear up a sinus problem. But, as most experts will tell you, always check with the spa beforehand to make sure that this is the service for you.

"An inhalation room a steam room equipped with eucalyptus," Boscarino said. "Eucalyptus is an essential oil that is wonderful for opening up your sinuses. The humidity incorporated with the eucalyptus or other essential oils have the capacity to open up your sinuses to help you breathe better."
