Confirmation to the Catholic Church is a rite of passage. The confirmed person, usually young teen, is brought to the Bishop at the front of the church, along with all of the other candidates for Confirmation. Each candidate is asked a series of questions and makes promises, followed by an anointment with oil of chrism.

According to Steve Shadrick, the Vice President of Consumer Marketing and Judith Vap, the Marketing Communications Manager for Inspirations.com, "Confirmation is more abstract."

The Rite of Confirmation includes a renewal of the Baptismal Promise. The Bishop then lays his hands on the person to be confirmed. This signifies the power and strength that comes to the person through the Holy Spirit. Laying on of Hands also reminds the candidate to live their life as Jesus would want and to share the message with others.

Next, the Bishop calls the candidate by name, using either the person's given name or the name of a saint chosen especially for this occasion. At the same time, the Bishop anoints the person with oil of chrism. This signifies that this person has been chosen by God.

Finally the Bishop declares the person sealed with the gift of the Holy Spirit. At the conclusion of this ceremony, the confirmed person is a full fledged member of the Catholic Church with the same rights and responsibilities to the church as adults.

Gifts for this occasion are more practical than those for First Communion. Steve and Judith tell us, "Confirmation won't use a lot of dolls."

Good choices for the newly confirmed Catholic include wall crosses specifically designed to commemorate conformation. Wall crosses can be made of ceramic, metal, wood, or polymer. Oftentimes they come with a prayer card to be displayed along with the cross. Some have a dove, or other symbol in the center of the cross, others are made of etched glass with a Bible verse or spiritual quote inscribed on them.

Table displays are often made from glass or ceramic, they may include an inspirational verse and a cross. Etched glass is always a beautiful table or shelf display.

For girls, Confirmation pendant necklaces are a beautiful choice. Many are in the shape of a heart or dove. Some include rhinestone, and still others feature an inscribed Bible verse.

Charming inscribed wall hangings are a good choice for boys. The verse or quote will serve as a source of inspiration and encouragement for years to come.

A hand crafted wood and pewter crucifix is a gift appropriate for anyone.

Keepsake boxes are a gift which the person can keep on their dresser or on a special shelf in their room. Some are elegant enough to become treasured heirloom items.

A special rosary with case is the gift choice if you want to give something beautiful, lasting and meaningful. You can find rosaries made from wood, ceramic, or glass.

No matter what you give as a confirmation gift, you will convey your love, faith and pride by choosing a gift that will speak to the person's heart.
