How to Install Hewlett Packard Printers

By M. Wade

  • Overview

Before you can use your new Hewlett-Packard (HP) printer, you must follow specific procedures to set up its hardware components and install software and drivers onto your computer. Knowing which basic steps to follow, and in what order, will help ensure that your new printer operates properly upon first use, and will help you easily troubleshoot any problems or errors you might receive after you finish installing your Hewlett-Packard printer.
How to Install Hewlett Packard Printers
    • Step 1

Turn on the HP printer. After removing securing tape from all parts of the printer, plug the power cord that came with your printer into the back (or side) of the printer and into a power outlet. Press the power button once to turn on the printer. If the printer does not power up, check to see if the power cord is fully plugged into the printer and the power outlet.
    • Step 2

Insert print cartridges and install paper trays. If your HP printer is an inkjet printer, open the print cartridges that came with your printer and fasten them into the printer's cartridge carriage. Although the specific steps for inserting an inkjet cartridge will depend on the model of your HP printer, the printer will automatically expose the cartridge carriage when you press a button or open a cover, so you do not have to manually drag the cartridge carriage to install ink cartridges. You will know the ink cartridges are firmly secured in the carriage if you hear a clicking sound when pressing them into the carriage. If your HP printer is a laser printer, the laser toner cartridge will already be installed and ready for use. If your printer has separate paper trays, attach these securely into the appropriate slots.

    • Step 3

Plug the USB cable into the printer only. Plug the type-B connector end (the small, square end) of the USB cable into the back (or side) of the printer. Do not plug the USB cable into the computer until you are prompted to do so by the software installation CD, as doing so may disrupt the software installation process.
    • Step 4

Run the software installation CD. Your computer will likely run the program automatically after you insert the CD into your computer's CD-ROM drive. If your computer does not automatically start the installation program, select your CD drive and explore the contents of the CD. Double-click the setup file and follow the on-screen instructions.
    • Step 5

Print a test page. Once installation of the printer's software is complete, the software will prompt you to print a test page. This will determine if the software installation and hardware setup was successful. Make sure you load the paper into the correct paper tray before printing a test page, as you will receive an error message if the printer detects that the paper tray is empty.
