Laminate flooring is typically installed as a floating floor. What that means is that it's not permanently attached to the support. It's a "glueless" type of installation where the planks lock together and create a monolithic surface. By attaching together, it keeps the floor in place. You typically leave a quarter inch space around the perimeter of the room to allow for the natural expansion and contraction of the floor since this is not permanently attached.

Typically like with any kind of hard surface floor covering, it is important that you are installing on level surface. That means making any repairs to the subfloor; making sure the subfloor is level because they are hard and they are not geared like carpet would be to following the contour of the floor.
