How to Install a Lexmark 8300 Printer

By Daniel Barrows

  • Overview

The 8300 series of Lexmark printers combines the capabilities of an inkjet printer, scanner, copier and fax machine into a single multipurpose device. These Windows-compatible machines can print files directly from a variety of portable storage media, including Compact Flash, Smart Media, Memory Sticks and Micro Drives, making an 8300 series printer an attractive tool of digital photographers. These units print at resolutions up to 4800 by 1200 dpi, at a rate of 25 monochrome or 19 color pagers per minute. But first, you have to install the printer.
    • Step 1

Insert one end of the power cord into the power-cord connector located at the back of the printer. Plug the remaining end into an electrical socket.
    • Step 2

Insert one end of the telephone cord into the EXT port located at the back of the printer. Plug the remaining end into a phone-line socket.

    • Step 3

Insert one end of the USB cord into the USB connector located at the back of the printer. Plug the remaining end into one of your computer's USB slots.
    • Step 4

Turn on your printer and computer. If any "New Hardware" screens appear on your computer, click "Cancel." Insert the installation CD into your computer's CD drive; if CD is unavailable, download installation software from the Lexmark website (see Resources). Launch the installation program and follow the onscreen directions.
    • Step 5

Lift the scanner unit on the printer. Wait for the cartridge holder to move into view. Lift the cartridge lids by pressing down on the cartridge levers. Insert the print cartridges into the correct slots (black ink goes on the left, color goes on the right). Close the cartridge lids and lower the scanner unit.
    • Step 6

Lift the paper exit tray and extend the paper guide. Load paper into the paper tray. Slide the paper guides until they are flush with the paper. Lower the paper exit tray.
    • Step 7

Press "Copy Mode," then the rectangular menu icon. Use the arrow buttons to select "Maintenance" and press the checkmark button. Use the arrow keys to select "Align Cartridges" and press the checkmark button; an alignment page will print. At this point, the printer is ready for use.
