Step 1
Visit a reputable store marketing SUV and truck accessories. Choose a set of truck running boards that matches the exterior appearance and color of your vehicle. Check the kit to ensure that the instruction sheet has been provided, and also whether the hardware (screws or bolts) are available with the kit. If the latter isn't provided with the kit, visit a hardware store and purchase bolts or screws (whichever is applicable) to match the specifications of the holes that may be pre-drilled in your vehicle, or which you may need to drill yourself.

Organize your tools and then open up the truck running boards kit. If an instruction sheet is provided, keep it handy, too.

Place one truck running board beneath each door and make sure they are precisely, aligned. Here is where your helper can assist you. Ensure that the truck running boards you have purchased are the correct ones for your vehicle. One indication of their compatibility is that they should fit perfectly beneath the frames that are fitted under the front doors of your vehicle.

Step 4
Check whether your vehicle already has factory-drilled holes to accommodate truck running boards, or whether you'll need to drill appropriate holes to match the truck running boards you intend to buy. Decide whether you wish to install your truck running boards with screws or bolts. If your vehicle does not have the pre-drilled holes provided for installing truck running boards, proceed as follows.

Inspect the truck running boards to ascertain how many holes you will need to drill into the body or frame, and whether screws will be more appropriate than bolts or vice versa.

Drill the required number of holes into the body or frame of one side of your vehicle, where appropriate, using a powered drill and suitable metal bit. Make sure that the holes are drilled into more solid, rather than thinner/hollow areas, as the truck running boards may bend, flex or get ripped off the frame when they experience pressure of weight later. Repeat this process for the other side of your vehicle.

Step 7
Get your helper to hold a truck running board at one end while you screw or bolt it firmly into place at the other end. Repeat this for the other (helper's) side, and again, for the other side of your vehicle.

Step 8
Test the installation by standing several times on each of the installed truck running boards. Press down on each with all your weight. This will reveal whether or not they have been installed securely.
