Installing a Lexmark 5400 Printer

    Lexmark's 5400 is a competitively priced all-in-one color printer. It lists for under $60, and features zippy capabilities of 25 pages per minute in black and 18 pages per minute in color. In addition, it has a full-featured fax with auto document feeder. It connects via USB cable and is compatible with both Windows and Macintosh computers.

    • Step 1

      Unpack the printer, taking care to remove all the packing material. Put the power cable, the ink cartridges, the RJ-11 phone cable and the drivers (on the CD) aside where you can easily get to them.

    • Step 2

      Prepare the printer for service by opening the paper tray, loading the paper and engaging the output tray.

    • Step 3

      Plug the printer in and connect the RJ-11 phone cable to an outlet if you wish to use the fax capability.

    • Step 4

      Install the ink cartridges and confirm that they're firmly seated.
      Use only Lexmark OEM ink cartridges.
    • Step 5

      Configure the settings on the unit using the left and right arrow keys. This is where you select the language, date/time and fax settings. Use the check key to save your settings.
    • Step 6

      Install the drivers from the CD. On Windows computers, they should run automatically. Mac users will have to double click on the CD icon on the desktop to launch. Restart your computer upon completion. If you're not able to use the CD, download drivers from

    • Step 7

      Verify that the software has installed correctly by checking if the computer recognizes the printer. Windows users should open the control panel, open Printers and Faxes to see the printer. Mac users should open System Preferences, select the Print & Fax icon, and the printer will be listed there.
