Step 1
Remove the cartridge from the printer. Holding it upright, drill a small hole anywhere in the top of the container. Anywhere around the Lexmark logo is a convenient place to put the hole. Most refill kits include a small, hand-operated drill you can use, or you can use a power drill with a small bit--around 1/16 inch in diameter. After the hole is drilled, remember to keep the cartridge upright to avoid spilling ink.

Step 2
Remove the ink and the syringe from the ink kit. Fill the syringe with no more than 15ml of ink and insert its long needle into the hole you just drilled. The bottom of the cartridge contains a pad that holds the ink, so you will encounter some resistance as you insert the needle. Continue to apply pressure until you feel the needle touch the plastic bottom of the cartridge. Slowly inject the ink, giving the pad time to soak it up as you go. Leave the inkjet cartridge alone and in the upright position for at least 5 minutes to give the ink time to seep in.

Step 3
Place one of the hole-sealing stickers (which come with the kit) over the hole to prevent the ink from drying up over time. As an alternative, you can use a piece of tape. Though the hole is covered, it is still possible for ink to seep out, so try to leave the cartridge upright. Insert it back into the printer in the same fashion that it came out, and close the lid that covers the cartridge area. The printer should now recognize a full ink cartridge and allow you to print as usual. It is a good idea to print a test page, because the first few lines could turn out splotchy as the ink evens out in the container.
