Instructions for Refilling Dell Printer Ink Cartridges

By Catherine Johnson

  • Overview

Replacing your printer-ink cartridges with new ones each time you run out of ink is both expensive and highly inconvenient. By purchasing one of the many ink-refill kits that are widely available, you will have the convenience of easily refilling your cartridges on demand, and will also save money. Reusing your cartridge also helps the environment by reducing plastic waste. Here is how you can refill your Dell printer ink cartridges in just a few steps.
Save time and money by refilling your Dell printer ink cartridges.
    • Step 1

Consult your printer's user manual on how to remove the ink cartridge from your Dell printer. Place the cartridge on paper towels.
    • Step 2

Using the edge of the sharp knife or the blade of the scissors, gently peel off the Dell sticker from the cartridge. There should be a small hole underneath.

    • Step 3

Attach the needle to the syringe from the refill kit. Fill the syringe with 5 to 10ml of refill ink. Insert the needle deeply into the small hole. The needle should reach the bottom of the sponge that is located inside the cartridge.
    • Step 4

Slowly inject the ink into the cartridge until the sponge is completely full and saturated.
    • Step 5

Remove the syringe. Reapply the sticker over the hole. Check to see if the sticker is securely attached. Use Scotch tape to make sure the label firmly adheres to the cartridge.
    • Step 6

Turn your cartridge so the print head is facing downward. Allow the cartridge to sit on the paper towel for at least 20 minutes so the sponge has time to absorb all of the new ink. Do not let the print head touch the paper towels (you may need to slightly tilt the cartridge).
    • Step 7

Replace the refilled cartridge in the printer. Run the printer's cleaning cycle three times before beginning to print.
    • Skill: Easy

    • Dell ink refill kit
    • Sharp knife or scissors

    • Tip: As soon as you get a "low ink level" warning, refill your cartridges. If you wait too long and your cartridge becomes empty, you may not be able to print, even after you complete the refilling process.
