Instructions for Refilling HP Ink Cartridges

By Jason Gordon

  • Overview

Inkjet printer owners know the drill by now: cheap printer, expensive ink. Inkjet manufacturers keep coming out with cheaper printers that do everything from fax to copy, but they still make their money on the ink and ink cartridges that are designed for single use. Luckily, there are ways to refill them.
    • Step 1

Buy HP compatible ink. Ink cartridges are designed to only work with a certain formula of ink. This is both because inkjet print heads are sensitive pieces of equipment and because the manufacturer wants you to only be able to use their ink.
    • Step 2

When your printer tells you that ink is low, remove the near empty or empty cartridge and place it on a paper plate or towel over a work surface.

    • Step 3

Remove the outer label. If it is a black ink cartridge, there is only 1 fill hole. If it is a tri-color cartridge, there will be 3 fill holes.
    • Step 4

If the holes are open, fill the syringe with the appropriate ink (5 ml) and insert it slowly inside. You will feel some resistance when the needle hits the sponge inside the cartridge. Slowly depress the syringe and release the ink inside the cartridge. If the holes are too small, you make need to use an eye screw to widen them.
    • Step 5

Put the label back on the now full cartridge and place it back in the printer. Run 1 to 3 cleaning cycles and test it by printing a test page.
