Kathy Dodson, award-winning interior decorator and owner of Decorating Dens, says that you should not be afraid of using color when decorating your bathroom. She says that many people seem to be afraid of putting a dark color in the bathroom because it is generally a small room. "My thinking is that you are not going to make that room any bigger if you paint it stark white. It is a small room, and it's going to be a small room whether it is painted dark blue or bright white. So don't be afraid to use color."
After you choose your colors, you can begin to accessorize your bathroom. Dobson recommends the use of mirrors. "Use lots of mirrors because that's what gives you the space and light in the bathroom. Mirrors reflect the light that you are using, and they can double your light." She says that you should not skimp on the mirrors. "Frame your mirrors. Don't just leave your beveled glass mirror or your wall mirror up there. Get something with a nice frame on it, but you should always use big mirrors."
Another idea for accessories in your bathroom that Dobson suggests is the use of greenery. She says that greenery can help to eliminate the sterile feeling of a bathroom. "If you bring some hanging plants in or put some plants on your ledges, it brings the outdoors into your bathroom. This can make it feel more like a garden and less sterile less like a hospital."
While paint on the walls can add significant color into a bathroom, you can also incorporate more color into your bathroom through your accessories. Some of these accessories include towels, the shower curtain, rugs, wall decorations, window treatments and other decorative items. You can even bring accessories into the bathroom that may not be intended specifically for the bathroom. For instance, you could use a decorative flowerpot to hold toiletries or you could use a martini glass to hold soaps. Sometimes the unexpected flair can really add to your décor.
When decorating your bathroom, you also need to keep in mind what will be functional. You do not want to use fabrics or wall décor that would be damaged by the steam from the shower. It is also wise to remember that everything will need to be wiped down when cleaning. Of course, you still want everything to look nice, but definitely take into consideration how the room will be used.
