An Introduction To Chemicals For Artists

Information on 3 eco-house products that are made with natural ingrediants and discusses advantages of their use in the house.

There are many chemicals and solvents on the market these days. Many are very toxic and can be a concern for you if you paint indoors or have children running around the house. Getting their curious fingers into things they aren't supposed to. I have done a little research and have found some products that use natural ingrediants for their products.

These products are used with oil painting and have been formulated even for very sensitive people.

The advantage to the use of natural ingredients in your home is that obiviously you wont be breathing in toxins floating in the air from the chemical. When was the last time you checked your furnace filter?

The typical health-hazards in traditional painting aid preperations were overally aggressive solvents and heavy metals in driers and pigments.

The biggest difference is your well-being and the well-being of others that may live with you. Please be aware that since a solvent turns solid paint ingrediants into a paintable liquid by dissolving resins, oils, waxes and fats; by definition a solvent can not be totally harmless. But not always the most aggressive of solvents have to be used to do the job you want.

I have currantly found three low-risk volatile solvents and thinners with a varying solving strength so that the painter can make a more targeted choice in the degree of solvent potency and health risk associated with it.

The first of the three chemicals I am about to tell you about is the Extra Mild Citrus Thinner. This is a medium strength, general purpose thinner and mild solvent.

These are the following ingrediants to the Extra Mild Citrus Thinner just incase you the reader might want to know what exactly is in it and thereby awnsering some questions you might have.

Isoparaffinic mineral oils- are commonly used in pharmaceuticals, sun tan lotions, hair sprays and in animal feed. According to a study conducted by the American National Paint, Varnish and Laquer Assosiation they are by far less involved in the formation of smog and the depletion of the ozone layer than any other solvent due to their chemical inertness.

Natural orange peel oil is the actual solvent component. It is used in small amounts only to avoid the risk of a sensitizing affect.

You can also use Extra Mild Citrus Thinner for thinning and clean-ups. It can also be used as a volatile medium with most conventional oil-based products. It does not however dissolve dammar resin. The liquid is clear and transparent and because it's a solvent try to avoid too much vapor by keeping the room where you are working in well ventilated.

The second product is Neutralthin. This is a odorless, general purpose paint thinner, brush cleaner and volatile painting medium. It has a hypoallergenic formula without essential oils which makes it suitable for most chemicaly sensitive people and is clear and transparent.

The third is Natural Orange Terpene solvent which

is the most potent of solvents in the Eco-House product line. It can be used as a substitute for turpentine. Although this product may have a sensitizing effect on people with hypersensitivities- because of the natural essential oils. The solvent can be mixed into any ratio with Extra Mild Citrus Thinner or Neutralthin. It is also clear and transparent.
