Step 1
Look online. There are many free advice web sites for new inventors to go to for help. Free Inventors Help has a lot of useful information on patenting, prototyping and marketing a product, while Ask the Inventors answers any questions you might pose about the process with a prompt email.

Step 2
Within the US Government Patent Office is a group called the Inventors Assistance Center (IAC) whose experienced members assist you in the complex job of finding the right forms and filling them out. While you are there, you should either download or request the following brochures or forms.

Step 3
Local inventor groups or associations will have people like you who are in the process of patenting and selling or licensing a product. They can help guide you to the knowledge and resources you might need to get your own project off the ground.

Step 4
You local library may well have several books that will explain the inventing and patenting process, as well as give you good ideas as to which companies you might want to offer your product, if you want to license it rather than sell it yourself.
