Also, if you are planning on hosting the party at a venue other than your home (like a restaurant), be sure to book it at least three months in advance, since many of these locations get booked early for the holiday season. While etiquette books feel it is customary that the host provide all food and drinks (aside from alcoholic drinks), it has become a trend to throw potluck parties, where guests bring in a favorite dish. Be sure to indicate this on the invitation if you expect others to bring in a dish. Also, since the party will be going on until the wee hours of the morning, indicate on the invitation whether or not children are welcome.
