A sense of humor is the most important thing. Some people get overly worried about being in every place in the best season. In most places it's more important to avoid the worst season than to try to be there at the best season. Most of the time most of the world is not having perfect weather so what that's the way people live their lives. You can't really expect perfect weather. The other thing is to realize that the weather is unpredictable. Even if you go during the season when it usually doesn't rain it still might. Anything could happen, so in terms of adjusting to things like weather I think leaving more flexibility, more time, in your plans is the best way to prepare.
If you have just one day to see a place and it rains, well, that's a disaster, but if you have three, four days at each place, so what if it rains on one of them. There is always something you can do on a rainy day. So not trying to rush too much is a really good idea for dealing with lot of the things that might happen in travel.
That brings me to another point - most of us have very short vacations in the United States compared to other countries, which is very unfortunate. If you want to travel more, start lobbying for longer vacations because we have shorter vacations and are forced to travel in a rush. People get more out of their trip and have more fun if they don't have to squeeze everything into two weeks. Most people try to do much too much in too little time and their vacations suffer for it greatly. So what I typically tell people is if you have a list of things you want to do or places you want to see, cut it in half at least and you will probably have a better trip.
