Biography of Jean-Paul Sartre, an author who was born in Paris, France. His father died when he was young.

Jean-Paul Sartre, recipient of the 1964 Nobel Prize for Literature, was born in Paris, France. His father died when he was young. He was educated at the University of Fribourg in Switzerland and the French Institute in Berlin. Beginning in 1929 he taught philosophy.

Sartre published philosophical essays, novels, and plays. His first publication, L'IMAGINATION (IMAGINATION: A PSYCHOLOGICAL CRITIQUE), appeared in 1936. His major philosophic work is L'ETRE ET LE NEANT (BEING AND NOTHINGNESS), which was published in 1943. He declined the Nobel Prize for Literature in protest of the bourgeois society.

Jean-Paul Sartre died in Paris, France in 1980.
