About the Jones Beach Breast Cancer Walk

By Sabah Karimi

  • Overview

Making Strides Against Breast Cancer is a campaign sponsored by the American Cancer Society; hundreds of communities and individuals in Jones Beach, Long Island, show their support for breast cancer awareness by participating in the walk or sponsoring a walker. Over 500,000 walkers around the country participated in the event in 2007, and teams, individuals and companies have helped to raise over $50 million through Making Strides events.
  • Significance

The Jones Beach Breast Cancer Walk is an event backed by the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer organization, and it typically takes place in late October in Jones Beach State Park. In 2008, the more than 50,000 participants raised over $1.25 for breast cancer research and awareness through online efforts and over $3 million dollars through both online and offline campaigns. Individuals interested in participating in the walk can register for the event by visiting the American Cancer Society Events website (see Resources), or they can register at the event itself on the day of the walk.
  • Features

The Jones Beach Breast Cancer Walk begins at 8 a.m.; participants proceed through the registration tents to begin the walk. The event is not a race, and individuals can start the course at any time between the designated walk hours. Walkers and volunteers are encouraged to wear pink or custom-designed T-shirts to show their support. Groups and individuals who want to set up a team for the Jones Beach walk can use several resources on the website to distribute fliers, set up a team Web page and promote their team's efforts up to and after the event.

  • T-Shirts

Custom T-shirts for the event are available only for teams of 12 people or more; teams that want to create custom T-shirts to show their team spirit can download the official Long Island T-Shirt order form and submit payment to the American Cancer Society office in Hauppauge, New York. The American Cancer Society does not distribute free T-shirts to individuals or companies participating in the walk, but participants are encouraged to purchase merchandise through merchants that donate a portion of the proceeds toward breast cancer awareness charities and programs.
  • Considerations

Since the Jones Beach State Park parking lot fills up with participants and event-goers as early as 7 a.m., carpooling or walking to the event site is recommended. Individuals can send eCards to share their experiences from walk day and also share a personal website landing page for collecting donations. Anyone can participate in the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer event, and those who are not completing the actual walk can sign up to be volunteers or sponsor a walker with a tax-deductible donation.
  • Community Building

The Jones Beach Breast Cancer Walk brings together friends, families and breast cancer survivors of all ages and backgrounds to show their support for the American Cancer Society. This community event is a popular volunteer effort for the Jones Beach and Long Island community and continues to attract thousands of supporters each year. There is no registration fee and no minimum amount to raise to participate in the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer event.
