Kid Craft: Headband

Learn how to make a pretty headband for your daughter's dance recital, school dance, or daily wear!

Making a personalized headband with your child can be a very rewarding experience. Headbands are great for little girls to have to keep their hair from falling in their face while playing sports, studying at school, or spending time with the family. If your daughter needs a specific type of headband for a school dance or a dance recital, or even if you just want to do a special craft with someone you love, try making this craft.

You can purchase single headbands or headbands in bulk at most craft stores, or even beauty supply stores. Unfortunately, the headbands that come from craft stores are typically the plain, plastic kind, but this project is all about changing that! The objects that you will need to make your own headband will vary depending on how you want your headband to look. You will definitely need ribbon, but you can also add rhinestones, silk flowers, and any number of other objects used in crafting. You will also need a glue gun. Depending on the objects you plan to attach to the headband, you may also need craft glue.

To start, pick a type of ribbon that you want to use for the base of the headband. This ribbon should be relatively thick, as thin ribbon won't overlap as well. Start at one end of the headband and attach the ribbon to the end of the headband using the glue gun. Then start wrapping the ribbon around the headband so that it overlaps itself slightly every time you wrap it. When you get to the other end and have completely covered the headband with ribbon, cut the ribbon and use the glue gun to secure the end to the headband.

If you want to add more ribbon, you can try to do a crisscross pattern on top of the ribbon you have already secured.

The base of your headband is now complete. Decorating comes next! Rhinestones tend to be a favorite decorating object with young girls. You can cover the entire top of the headband with rhinestones if you would like. To do this, apply a thin layer of craft glue over the ribbon and start applying the rhinestones in a pattern of your choice. You can also limit the number of rhinestones that you use. A headband with black ribbon and randomly placed rhinestones is very pretty!

Small, silk craft flowers also add a nice touch to these headbands. Try placing the flowers in small clusters; an entire headband of tiny silk flowers can be quite overwhelming.

Ribbons can also be attached to the headband. Use ribbons thinner than the ribbons that you used to wrap around the headband. Try making a bow out of the ribbon and attach the bow using a dot of glue from the glue gun. You can cover any excess glue on the ribbon by adding rhinestones or silk flowers to the top of it. Make sure all glue dries before allowing your daughter to wear the headband.
