Learn how to make a rhinestone barrette for your daughter to wear!
To start making the barrette, you will need to pick a type of ribbon that you want to use for the base of your barrette. The ribbon should be fairly thick so that it is easier to overlap the ribbon. Attach the ribbon to one end of the barrette clip with a dot of glue from the hot glue gun. Press this drop down until the ribbon so that the ribbon does not have a bump underneath. When the glue is dry, start wrapping the ribbon around the length of the barrette. Make sure you do not wrap around the clipping portion of the barrette because this will keep the barrette from being usable. You may have to remove the prong from the barrette depending on the thickness of your ribbon. Don't forget to replace it when you are done! When you finish wrapping the ribbon around the entire length of the barrette, cut the ribbon and secure the end with a dot of hot glue. Keep the stray end under the barrette so that it is not visible. Also, if you have chosen the style of barrette that has a hole in the end, do not cover the hole with the ribbon. You will need to use this hole later.
When the glue has dried at the end of the ribbon, determine what size, style, and pattern of rhinestone that you would like to use. Depending on the width of your barrette, you can do many rows of rhinestones or a crisscross pattern. You can also randomly place the rhinestones all over the barrette so that you can see a lot of the ribbon. Also, you can cover the entire barrette with rhinestones. Don't worry that you cannot see the ribbon if you choose to cover the whole barrette. Sometimes the ribbon is used solely to have a surface to which the rhinestones will stick. Use craft glue to attach the rhinestones to the ribbon on the barrette clip. Let the glue dry and then move on to the next step.
Choose a few colors of ribbons and cut strips of these ribbons. The strips should be approximately six inches long. Tie these ribbons to the hole in the end of the barrette, so that three inches of the ribbons are on either side of the hole. You can cover the knot with another rhinestone. Let the glue dry and then enjoy your new barrette! Give it away as a gift, put it in a doll's hair, or wear it yourself!
