Virtually any rechargeable battery is used. The nickel metal hydrides have a much longer cycle life than the old NiCads did. This means they last much longer with many more charge and discharge cycles, up to a 1000.
Then you have a sealed battery. Sealed lead acid batteries are very common car batteries. Certain types of applications require a charge controller, which means that when you are charging the battery, when that battery is full, you stop charging. You have to do this so the battery doesn't blow up.
When you are talking about a deep cycle, like a 12 volt deep cycle battery or marine type deep cycle battery in a bigger system, you want to make sure that that battery stops charging when it is full. That's where the charge controllers go between the solar panel and your battery, to stop charging at a particular voltage, around 14.4 volts.
