Of course, being right on the ocean, this is a great place for fresh seafood. In fact, at one time this was one of the major shrimp fisheries in the country. A lot of it is seafood based; particularly shrimp, oysters, fresh fish, and that sort of thing. One of the unusual twists to cuisine here is the influence of the Minorcans. The Minorcans are from the island of Minorca in the Mediterranean. It is actually right next to Majorca, which most people have heard of. These people came here in the mid 1700s and they have been here ever since and they have a great influence on the area's culture. Their food is somewhat spicy and they have a pepper which they brought here from Minorca and this is one of few places in the United States where those are cultivated and grown. There is a great Cuban influence here with Cuban food and Cuban restaurants. Of course, you can also find your typical American food with steaks and that sort of thing. But seafood I think is one of the primary attractions that they have here particularly with the Minorcan chowders and spices and that sort of things.
