It is the primary water containment system in the pond. It is also usually the first failure point. If your pond will hold water, nothing else matters right? So in picking inadequate cheap or poorly installed liners or trying to do it yourself to save a few bucks, you are causing the entire system to fail. I mean the plants can die. The pumps can burn out. I have seen pond walls collapse because the liner was too soft, and it slipped in a heavy rain causing it to give way. The whole pond collapsed and filled up with mud. All the fish died. I have seen animals damage the liner, raccoons, deer, and even dogs.
I have seen ponds installed so badly where nobody paid attention to water levels, folds, or low spots.
