What is kindergarten teaching your children? Kindergarten should be an exciting and positive introduction to school.
Kindergarten should be an exciting and positive introduction to school. Your child's school should promote exploration and experimentation with the surrounding environment. There should be a lot of room for fun and creative play. There are also several other things that should be included in your child's curriculum. When looking for a program make sure as much of the following is included as possible:
Social development. This includes free time spent with peers to develop social skills such as sharing and respect. He should learn how to interact in a positive manner with others his own age. Your child should also learn to take turns and how to follow directions. He should learn about the community around him and be introduced to many different cultures.
Reading. There should be a reading time each day to introduce your child to exciting new books. If the teacher shows an enthusiasm for reading the children will also be enthusiastic. Your child should also be taught to recognize letters and the sounds that they make. Many schools use animal names to teach the alphabet, this can add extra fun, which is always a bonus in education.
Math. Your child should be taught to recognize numbers from one to twelve, and learn to count to one hundred. The children should learn about patterns and sequences, shapes and calendars
Science. The children should be introduced to many animals and their environments. They should also learn about the seasons. These should be taught in a hands on way that will let the kids become involved in their surroundings.
Concepts. By the end of this year your child should know about same, different, opposites, up, down, etc.
Art. It is important for little fingers to explore different types of mediums. By using crayons and paint brushes the little fingers will gain skill that will be used next year when introduced to writing.
If your child's kindergarten class is lacking in any of these areas you should either switch classes or make up the difference at home. It is important for your child to be prepared for first grade and by making sure these things are learned she will be.
