When remodeling your kitchen, you will want to research what some kitchen cabinet designs are available to you. Jason Flippo, who is the owner and president of Signature Home Improvement Inc, which is a business that concentrates on remodeling kitchens and living areas, offers these examples: "One is a European style. That is where you look at the cabinets and all you see are doors and nothing else. Also called 'Frameless Cabinets', they have special hinges that attach to the inside of the cabinet. You don't see any of the frames; it looks like a big wall of doors. They are real tall, like 42 inches. (In addition) the upper cabinets are what you see in the upgrade or in the nicer homes. If you go with something more modern, you could do stainless steel doors on your cabinets. You could do raised panel doors, which are the most common in the newer homes."

The book "Home Project Manager: Kitchen Planner", published in 1997 by Cowles Creative Publishing, says, "If you're going to take the plunge and replace all of your cabinets, the first decision you'll need to make is whether you want to buy manufactured or custom-made cabinets. Then, you'll need to pick between face-framed and frameless (European Style) construction. Style and material choices come next, and finally you'll determine the particular sizes and shapes of individual cabinets to fit into your floor plan."

The choice between whether you want manufactured or stock cabinet really comes down to how much money you have to spend. There are some manufacturers that offer semi-customized cabinets to utilize an awkward, wasted space in your kitchen. The making of this decision is just all about shopping around and seeing if you can work with the standard cabinets available.

Choosing between the face-framed or frameless construction designs is simply about the look that you are going for. There are a lot of attractive hinges available nowadays to fit into almost any décor but for a sleek, contemporary modern look, nothing quite beats the European Style cabinets. Also, these offer a smidgen more storage space merely because of their tight fitting design.

Now we move onto the material. The "Home Project Manager: Kitchen Planner" states, "Almost all cabinets, whether they are stock or custom made, are created from a combination of materials. The main body and shelves are often made from a sturdy, less expensive material, while the visible elements use premium materials." The basic cabinets that you can choose from "are 'Solid Wood' (which) is the most expensive...long-lasting (but) has a the potential to warp, 'Plywood Veneer' looks like solid wood but is less expensive and won't warp, 'Medium-Density Fiberboard' is a combination material (that) like plywood, combines material to save cost and add strength", and finally there "is 'Low-Density Fiberboard' (that) is a less expensive and weaker type fiberboard that is often used as shelving or body material in cabinets. It's usually coated with a plastic called melamine which is available in a variety of colors and gives cabinets and shelves a modern look."

After deciding on the look and feel that you are going for, next comes the not-so-fun part. Measuring and re-measuring, and then reconfiguring what cabinets you need to make your kitchen as functional as possible. You want to squeeze every possible inch of storage space as you can, while still sticking as close as possible to your original design.

You can also consider installing metal cabinets, like those found in a garage, for kitchen cabinets. You can have glass doors, open shelving, custom plate racks and more. There are a lot of options available for making your kitchen design unique. Depending on your budget and base structure, the sky is the limit when it comes to kitchen cabinet design
