    About Kitchen Chair Seat Cushions
Long, delicious meals over a friendly kitchen table can be an immense pleasure---or they can be a literal pain in the rear. Kitchen chair seat cushions can come to your rescue. These items, which usually measure about 1 square foot, bring comfort as well as a fashionable statement to the entire dining area. A large variety and styles of kitchen chair seat cushions are on the market, from paisley to plaid, pinstripes to polka dots.
  • Function

The most obvious function of the kitchen chair seat cushion is to make sitting in the kitchen more comfortable. Many kitchen chairs are constructed with wooden, wicker or other flat, hard seats. Seat cushions add comfort for people who suffer from back or leg pain if they sit for long periods of time. The cushions also serve to protect the original furniture or hide unsightly gouges, stains or other blemishes on the chair.
  • Types

The traditional kitchen chair cushion used to be a fluffy, square pad with at least two sets of ties on one end to fasten to the back of the chair. While the traditional cushion still exists, the types of kitchen chair cushions have expanded greatly. Some are now available with a no-slip vinyl or other firm backing on the bottom that stays in place and eliminates the need for the little ties. Thickness and firmness also varies greatly. Some are nearly as thin as a placemat while others can boost you up a good inch or more. Most are filled with firm foam that will not sag or become misshapen with constant use.

  • Features

The biggest difference between chair cushions is the outer fabric that is used. Kitchen chair cushions come in many different hues as well as a wide range of different patterns. Roosters, cats, lighthouses, fruit, vines and flowers are just a small sampling of the different patterns available. The type of material can also vary, from a sleek, silk-like outer shell to a thick, woven cotton. Many are made from materials that are easy to keep clean, such as chenille-like poly blends that wipe clean with a damp rag. Some may feature embellishments, such as ruffles around the edges or buttons secured in the middle.
  • Considerations

While beige satin kitchen chair cushions may look gorgeous on the store shelf, keep in mind how much activity goes on in the kitchen. Beige satin, a material and color that is difficult to keep spotless, would not bode well in a house full of kids who spill grape juice or dogs who jump on chair sets with muddy paws. Some cushions can wiped clean, some won't easily come cleaned even when scrubbed and others can be thrown in the washing machine with a load of laundry. Focus on which cushions best fit your lifestyle over which one looks best on the store shelf.
  • Potential

If you cannot find the perfect set of kitchen chair seat cushions, you can always make your own. While the general premise for is fairly simple, the end result can be anything but. Cushions can be made out of beaded lace, old drapery, bedspreads, clothing items or other interesting materials. They can also be embellished with patches, fringe, charms or feathers around the edges or embroidery.
