About the Lake County Breast Cancer Walks

By Jennifer Eblin

  • Overview

Lake County is the farthest north-east county in Illinois; the county is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Every year Lake County is home to several different walks geared toward raising funds for finding a cure for breast cancer and raising awareness of the disease.
  • Avon Walk for Breast Cancer

Avon Walk for Breast Cancer takes place annually on the first Friday and Saturday in June. Avon Walk Chicago, on June 6 and 7 in 2009, covers nearly 40 miles during the two days, but groups can walk less depending on their physical capabilities. The Avon website allows individuals to register for the event, or participants can join an already existing group.
  • Breast Cancer 3-Day

Most of the proceeds from the Breast Cancer 3-Day walk go to Susan G. Komen for the Cure. Participants walk 60 miles over the course of three days, with some participants doing less if they can't make the entire journey. All walkers must agree to raise a minimum of $2,300. The 2009 Chicago 3-Day is scheduled for August 7 to 9.

  • Making Strides Against Breast Cancer

Making Strides Against Breast Cancer is the American Cancer Society's main event to raise funds and awareness to fight breast cancer. The Chicago event welcomes individuals, groups, and businesses, with many businesses putting together groups of walkers. The date of the event changes every year, but walkers can begin raising money early in the year.
  • Walk to Empower

More than 50,000 people will participate in Walk to Empower events across the country on Mother's Day, May 10, 2009. The Chicago Walk to Empower takes place in Grant Park and includes a 1- and 3-mile walk and a 5K run.
  • 5K Run/Walk

The 5K Run/Walk to Support Breast Cancer is held every year in the adjacent county of McHenry. The event takes place near Crystal Lake. Runners and walkers solicit donations, with all proceeds going toward raising awareness for breast cancer in Illinois.
