How Do I Landscape My Yard?

Find out answers to the question 'How do I landscape my yard and turn it into a beautiful scene'.

No matter what your house looks like, landscaping your yard is what makes your house look attractive. Whether you are building a new house or moving into an existing house where the landscaping has already been done, you can plan an attractive landscape and then make it the way you want it to be.

The first and most important step in your project is to make a plan. All great things happen with a plan. Before you start yours, drive around and check out what other people have done with their yards. You will want to make an original design that reflects you and your ideas, but seeing what others have done can help to spark your creativity. You should check out books from the local library too in order to help you get some ideas for your landscaping project.

Next, walk around the entire perimeter of your yard and look at it from different views. Make sure to pay special attention to the front yard and consider it carefully. Your front yard is seen by the world and visitors who come to your front door. An attractive,well-planned yard will look inviting. Decide what you can put where. That is, if you have children, you will need to allow a space in the back yard for them to play, have a swingset, sandbox, etc.

Now, you are ready to begin your plan using either pencil and paper or a computer. Make a layout of your yard and include telephone poles, existing trees, etc. If you are familiar with the different kinds of trees, flowers, and shrubs available, you can begin to decide on what you will want to plant in your yard. If not, then you should check out books from the library which include color pictures of all of these things. Think about the kinds of plants you want to use and the maintenance they will require too. You might want to choose low maintenance plants for ease in caring for your landscaped yard.

Keep in mind that plants in the front yard should be attractive at all times of the year because they will be seen the most. Bushes--the low growing types--and flowers can be planted across the front of the house, or, in two rows, one on each side of the doorway, porch, deck, etc. Outlining physical aspects of the house can bring the house and the yard together in an attractive manner.

Also remember not to plant tall plants, trees or shrubs anywhere they will cover house windows. If you live in a two story house, of course, you can use the taller varieties.

Small flower gardens or small spaces should only contain one color of a flower and only one variety. If you use more than one color or variety, the space will look too busy and will look unattractive. Instead of trying to use multiple colors, you can opt to use a certain number of your most favorite colors and use only those. Remember that the colors you choose should compliment the color of your house too.

Once you have completed your plan, you can purchase the materials and create your landscaping. These materials might even include fencing, artificial plants which always look good, mulch, and the like.
