Lanesboro, Minnesota is a historic small town in an area that is called Historic Bluff Country. We are nestled in the valley in Summer County of which the largest population is 2000. Lanesboro is a town of 788.

One of our major attractions in the revitalization of our small town has been the development of a paved bike trail. It's called the Root River State Bike Trail. We have over 60 miles of paved trail for biking, inline skating, hiking, and in the winter it is groomed for cross country skiing.

With the decline of farming in the 1970's and 80s many of our small farms were in jeopardy and our small town was dwindling. In 1985 the Milwaukee Rail Road bed was vacated because the train no longer came through our community. Because of that it was decided what should we do was develop it into the bike trail and it brought about a renaissance in many ways. Now tourism is one of our primary economic engines along with agriculture. Tourism is what's keeping Lanesboro ticking.

The second attraction I would say we are most famous for is that we have a live professional theatre called the Common Weal, which brings in actors and actresses from all over the world. They run eleven months of the year and they run multiple productions in any given week. The theatre draws a lot of art enthusiasts to our area. So, it's the outdoor recreation, the scenic beauty, and then the art - the three together are what makes Lanesboro famous.
