Lawn care often goes neglected during the winter. Maintaining grass is not difficult during the winter but it is necessary.
Grass often goes neglected during the wintertime. If you neglect your grass, it will show during the spring. It could result in dry patches and brown spots. Maintaining your lawn during the winter is not difficult. By using the following tips, you can have a beautiful lawn in the spring.
Because you lawn is not growing very rapidly during the early winter months (December - Early March) It is not the right time to fertilize it. However, when the weather becomes warmer in late winter, fertilizing will get your grass off to a healthy start. You can tell when your grass is growing just by looking at the color and how fast it is growing. The best time to fertilize your lawn is during late fall or early summer. Try using a time release fertilizer to ensure that your grass is getting its essential nutrients during the winter.
Your lawn is still living; therefore, if you live in a dry environment or it has failed to rain it is important to water your lawn every 3 or 4 weeks. Naturally, as your lawn begins to grow more rapidly, water it more often.
Weeding your grass is also important during the winter. Because your grass is not growing as fast as usually, Some weeds take advantage of this and begin to grow and can kill your grass.
You can kill these weeds before they start by purchasing herbicides to prevent their growth or you can wait until after they grow and then destroy them. You can also purchase a weed killer to destroy the weeds. Look for a spray so you can target each weed individually or pull the weed out by its root.
Read the instruction on your herbicides before you decide to use it.
If you want your grass green and thick during the winter, it might be a good idea to plant grass that is able to grow during the wintertime. Try planting rye grass. This type of grass is able to grow during the winter and gives you a green lawn. It will not kill the grass already in place, by the time your regular grass begins to grow rapidly again; the rye grass will die out. October is the optimum time to plant this grass. You can do so by removing weeds from the area you want to plant your grass. You can then create small grooves in your lawn to plant the grass. Then proceed to scatter grass seeds around the area. Then smooth over the grass. You might find it helpful to cover with compost or mulch.
Tip: AN easy way to plant grass will be to create grooves in the area your lawn and wait until it rains. Then proceed to plant your grass in the rain. You do not have to smooth over the dirt. (Be sure to wear a raincoat we don't want you to get sick.)
