Leadership Development Tips, Benefits And Exercises

These are a few basic tips for helping an aspiring leader in his development.

Leadership is a type of double-edged sword; it is a quality some people are born with while in others, it is learned.Since the beginning of written history, books have been documenting how to be an effective leader. In ancient times, leaders were the heroes of old: Achilles in Homer's Iliad, King Leonidas of the Spartans, and many Bible heroes including Moses, King David, and of course, Jesus.

Since then, as our world has expanded, we've seen leaders come and go: William the Conqueror, Christopher Columbus, George Washington, Robert E. Lee, Winston Churchill, Ronald Reagan, and so many others. We have seen leaders use their effectiveness to bring peace or to ruin nations, but most of us agree that a good leader is simply that: good.

In recent times, countless books have been written on how to be a good leader.Magazines are full of articles on how to lead, corporations spend exorbitant amounts of money each year on leadership training, and studies are constantly being done to determine just what it is that makes a leader tick. But in the end, there are a few simple characteristics to being a good leader.Following are a few tips to help aspiring leaders in their development.

1. Be humble. This is something that often seems contradictory to being a leader, but look at many of history's great leaders and you'll see just that.Humble leadership means putting the ones we lead ahead of ourselves, also known as servant leadership.Jesus is the epitome of this concept.

2. Learn from others.Although some people are born with the gift of leadership, the wisdom to know how to use those gifts comes from learning.Seek out other leaders and emulate them.Study the leaders of old and apprentice yourself to a leader you know, either through his books, teachings, or personally, if possible.

3. Be honest.Never try to be something you're not.If you don't know something, those following you will appreciate your willingness to search out the answer rather than pretend you know something you don't.Be yourself and tell the truth. If they ever catch you in a lie, your integrity will be compromised and they will no longer follow.

4. Choose your friends carefully.Be a friend to everyone, but be very selective about who you allow into your "inner circle."Seek out others who have similar values and goals; build them up and they will, in turn, build you up.Keep careful boundaries up around those who bring you down or cast a negative view on your goals. This doesn't mean your friends shouldn't disagree with you; you want people around you who will be honest and forthright, who will encourage you and keep you accountable.

5. Catch a vision.Effective leaders don't merely drift aimlessly and expect people to follow. You must have a purpose and vision for your company, your church, your group, or whatever type of establishment you are leading.People will naturally be drawn to good ideas and sensible plans and visions.

6. Leave a legacy.Every good leader was led by another. As you lead and grow in your leadership abilities, pay attention to young, aspiring leaders and encourage them as they learn.Give them your vision and let them take it to new heights.
