Learn How To Ski

Anyone can learn how to ski but there are some things you should know first.

Skiing is one of the most challenging sports, and it is also one of the most exhilarating. Soaring down the side of the mountain, seemingly gliding on air and going as fast or as slow as you like. There is a lot of equipment that goes along with skiing and overall it can be quite an expensive sport to engage in. Even once you have purchased all of your equipment, you will still be paying a hefty fee for a lift ticket. All ski equipment can be rented at most ski resorts so your best bet is to go rental for the first time to decide if this is really the sport for you. Kids can start skiing as young as three or four and often put the adults to shame on the slopes, but you can start skiing any time once you know the basics.

The equipment you will need for skiing is as follows: Ski pants or bib, ski boots, ski goggles, hat, gloves, jacket and of course skis and poles. Before you head out on the slopes you will want to do some warm up exercises and a lot of stretching. Skiing is a strenuous sport and you probably won't know it until the next day, but then you'll know it. Do your stretching before and after to minimize the pain!

One of the most important things you will need to learn once you've got your ski boots locked into your skis, is how to stop. Though there are a few ways to stop, the easiest way for a beginner is called the snow plow. Point your feet towards each other and put weight on the insoles of your feet. Start out on the bunny slope, or beginners slope where there is usually a rope tow to get you to the top.

Start out skiing back and forth, horizontally zig zagging the hill, this will keep you going nice and slow. Just keep practicing on the bunny slope until you are feeling a little braver and practice stopping, be sure you are an expert at stopping before you ever go up to the top of the mountain. Knowing how to stop is important for your safety and the safety of other skiers. With a little practice on your new feet, you'll be zipping down the slopes in no time!
