Lemon Balm Natural Healing Abilities

Lemon balm has many natural healing characteristics.

Lemon balm is a sweet scented herb with bright green serrated leaves and yellow, white, or pink flowers. The leaves of lemon balm have a sweet lemony scent. It can be found in Europe, Asia, North America, North Africa and Siberia. Lemon balm is sought after for its calming, comforting, soothing effects it has on the mind and for its strengthening effect it has for muscles. Lemon balm's essential oil is steam distilled from its leaves and flowers. Lemon balm's essential oil has a sweet and tangy lemon aroma. It is used for its antidepressant, digestive, sedative and stimulant properties.

Lemon balm has been used throughout history in many cultures for many different reasons; the plant was introduced to Britain in the 4th century and has been used there ever since. In was used to make wine and in their floor polish. It has been famed throughout history for its rejuvenating qualities and has been called "the elixir of life". In many cultures it has been used to help clear the head and increase understanding and sharpen the memory.

In today's aromatherapy it is used to regulate menstruation, soothing the pain and as a tonic for the uterus. It is also known to calm the heart and lower the blood pressure, and it is also good for fatigue. It calms breathing and settles a nervous stomach and is great for digestion. Because of its antihistamine properties it is good for allergies and asthma. Lemon balm oil is also used as an insect repellent but it is known to attract bees with its sweet smell.



Lemon balm oil has great effects on the skin; it can be helpful in cases of greasy hair and baldness. It has a wonderful soothing effect on bee stings and insect bites. Herbalists often prescribes it for much emotional use, such as to calm a person in a state of shock, panic or hysteria. It has been used throughout time for its ability with the heart and as a remedy for a distressed attitude. It is used in balancing the emotions and removing mental blocks.

It is not suggested to use lemon balm when pregnant because of its effect with balancing the menstrual cycle. It may irritate skin if used in large quantities, it is suggested for use on infected areas only: avoid surrounding areas of skin.
