Lenox was the first American company to produce large quantities of high quality porcelain china since 1906. According to Edish.com, in the early years, Lenox China Company had to convince the American consumer that they were selling high quality domestically produced porcelain worthy of consideration.

"Their product was both beautiful and durable, and the original porcelain formula was based on a traditional British formula," the website says.

Originally, Lenox was called the Ceramic Art Company, and their dishes were described as American belleek, a parion type ware. The Ceramic Art Company was founded in 1889, and then in 1906 the name was changed to Lenox, after Walter Scott Lenox, one of the company's founders. President Wilson ordered the first set of China to be used at the White House, which elevated the popularity of the company. The company has a reputation for quality hand workmanship. Besides China, the company is also known for crystal. In 1965, the company acquired Bryce Brother's, a high quality American crystal manufacturer.

"When buying crystal or china, know the company's track record," says Glenn DeStefano, the marketing director at Lenox. He has been with the company for five years. "Most brand name companies have built a reputation for the quality of their products."

"If you are not concerned about it breaking, then buy it anywhere," he says. If people have questions or concerns about any Lenox products, call their costumer service line to find out more information. "There is a lot of question and answer type interaction on the website," he says. "If you are going to buy expensive crystal, you want to buy from a reputable place." It is risky to buy from a non-brand name because you don't know what the dinnerware will be like in 50 years.

"If a customer wants to find Lenox retailers online, visit Ebay," says DeStefano. "It is just the level of goods that you are looking for, but there are websites where you can buy branded-merchandise at a lesser price."

As for crystal champagne glasses, they make a nice addition to special occasions. "You can go to some place like Bed Bath and Beyond and buy them inexpensively, but if you are looking for toasting flutes that you are going to use for your wedding and are planning on saving them, you want to get something nice," he says. "In this case, you would tend to go with something a little bit more expensive, because you would be getting a better level of crystal."

Crystal trays are not very common, and Lenox doesn't make a lot of them. People don't really use trays anymore because they break. If a person does want to buy them, DeStefano recommends handling them with great care. Proper care and usage of fine crystal can help an owner maintain it in top condition and last forever. When taking care of crystal stemware, the items can be placed in the dishwasher if they specify they are safe for dishwashers. For very fine crystal, "we typically recommend hand washing," says DeStefano.
