Lexmark Ink Cartridge Refilling Instructions

By Catherine Johnson

  • Overview

Replacing empty ink cartridges is an expensive part of the process of maintaining your Lexmark printer. A more affordable option is to use one of the widely available refill kits to simply refill your ink cartridge on demand. Not only does this save you money and time, but reusing your plastic ink cartridges also helps the environment by reducing unnecessary waste.
Quickly and conveniently refill your Lexmark ink cartridge.
    • Step 1

Turn your printer on and open the front cover. The ink cartridge holder should be in the center. Remove the cartridge you want to refill by pulling the cartridge top forward and snapping it out of the holder. Place the cartridge on top of several newspapers.
    • Step 2

Using the drill, create a small hole on the lower half of the cartridge top. If a refill hole already exists, gently remove the tape that seals it.

    • Step 3

Fill the syringe with refill ink. For black cartridges, you need 10 ml of ink. For color cartridges, fill the syringe with 5 ml of the appropriate color.
    • Step 4

Insert the needle of the syringe deep into the refill hole you created. Inject the ink slowly into the hole. Stop when the inner sponge of the cartridge is completely full.
    • Step 5

Pull out the syringe and wipe clean the area around the hole, using the toilet paper. Seal the hole by applying tape over it.
    • Step 6

Let the cartridge drip over the newspaper for about an hour. Make sure to set the cartridge so that the print head on the bottom does not directly touch the newspapers.
    • Step 7

Insert the bottom of the refilled cartridge into the holder inside of the printer. Push the cartridge top in until you hear a snapping sound. Close the printer cover.
