Alternative health: do it yourself aromatherapy recipes

Some simple recipes for aromatherapy remedies. Treat that cough, itch, headache, stomach ache, or sun burn the natural way.

Aromatherapy offers home remedies that not only will relieve pain or other ailments, but also smell good at the same time.

The following recipes are simple to put together and will offer an aromatic, natural way to heal.

Mixing 5 drops of tea tree oil with 1 drop lemon oil and 1 teaspoon vegetable oil can help the itch of athlete's foot. Soak a cotton ball in the mixture and apply to the affected area.

For blisters, apply 1 drop lavender and 1 drop chamomile and gently pat into the blistered area.

Burns should first have ice water applied for no less than ten minutes. Immediately after, apply 2 drops of lavender oil directly to the burned area. Cover with a compress soaked in 5 drops more of lavender essential oil.

For chapped lips, you can try using 2 drops geranium and 2 drops chamomile mixed with 2 teaspoons aloe vera gel. For larger chapped areas, try 5 drops lavender oil, 2 drops lemon oil, 10 drops each of chamomile and geranium mixed with 2 teaspoons of vegetable oil.

Dry coughs can be treated with 2 drops of eucalyptus and 2 drops lemon oil mixed with 2 tablespoons of honey. Take one teaspoon of the mixture and dilute it into a glass of warm water. Sip slowly.

Inhalants for coughs with mucus mix 2 drops of eucalyptus, 1 drop each of thyme and tea tree oil and two tablespoons honey. Take by the drop mixed into warm water.

Headache relief is only a few drops away if you use 3 drops of lavender and 1 drop of peppermint. Massage this into your temples and along the base of your skull.

For nervous headaches try 3 drops lavender and 1 drop chamomile and rub gently into your temples.

Toothaches can be relieved by applying 1 drop of clove oil on the affected area. You can also try massaging the jawbone and cheek with 1 drop each of clove and lemon, 3 drops of chamomile mixed with 1 teaspoon vegetable oil.

Sore throats and laryngitis can be treated by creating an inhalant from 1 drop thyme, 2 drops chamomile and 3 drops lavender. Place all in a steam vaporizer and allow your body to breath deeply.

Oil of lemon will take the sting out of insect bites as well as sunburn.

To relax after a hard day at work, burn a lavender candle and take a chamomile bath. Either will help you to let go of the day's stresses.

For heartburn, try 1 drop of peppermint oil to a teaspoon of honey. Dissolve this into one cup of warm water and sip slowly.

If you're exposed to the sun's rays for any length of time, try this oil to nourish your skin. Into 2 ounces of almond oil, add 2 tablespoons of sesame oil. Add the following essential oils to the mix, 5 drops chamomile, 2 drops geranium, 1 drop of bergamot and 10 drops lavender. Apply freely to all exposed areas after your bath or shower.

Aromatherapy and essential oils are relatively safe for people of any age. Some herb and foods do not react well with some prescription drugs. Before applying directly to skin or taking internally, be sure to check with your doctor.
