Fashions for Women: Buying a Bathing Suit That Looks Good

As any woman knows, shopping for a swimsuit that you like and that looks great can be a chore that seems impossible to accomplish. The myriad of styles, fabrics, and colors combined with the fact that each body type has its own needs to look its best and the task of finding a good suit can be downright confusing and frustrating. The good news is there are a few rules you can apply to your shopping in order to find the best suits for your body, allowing you to be comfortable and look wonderful on the beach or at the pool.

Tips for everyone:

Make sure the suit keeps you covered and is comfortable when you stretch, move around, or sit down. If not, try a new suit.

Don’t be stuck buying a suit strictly because it is the size you wear in street clothes. Oftentimes women need to go up a size in bathing suits.

If you see bulges in the suit, try another one b/c this one is too small. Plus, overtime, this suit likely will be uncomfortable.

When trying on suits, go on a day that you feel good. Also wear a thong or other small panties so you get a better sense of how the suit will fit when you head off to the beach.

Take your time! If you rush into a store and do not have time to try on many suits, you may end up taking the first one you find rather than selecting one that looks best on you.

If you are larger on the top than the bottom (or vice versa), shop for two piece suits that you can purchase as separates. This will ensure a great fit and could save you money, too.

Tips for your body type:

Short legs – If you have short legs, try high cut legs on the suit in order to give the illusion of length.

Wide hips – Wide hips can seem to be a focus for a woman in a bathing suit, but there are tricks to mask them. Higher cut legs look great on bottom heavy women despite sounding like a poor choice. Make sure that you take a look at the suit from the rear to ensure there is proper coverage of your backside; also try sitting down and standing up to see if the suit continues to keep you covered.

Thick waistline – If you are looking to mask a thick waistline, a tankini or one piece in a solid, dark color like black or navy will be most flattering. Some experts also recommend trying suits with patterns running at an angle in order to give the illusion of a small waist.

Stomach issues – Not everyone who shops for a bathing suit has the perfect abs we see on models in magazines. Today there are suits that have built in tummy support to flatten and hold that area in. Also

Long torso or short torso – Women with long or short torsos can find their best looking bathing suit style in the tankini. These suits look great on figures of all sizes and come in a variety of styles – allowing you to bare as much or as little as you please. Long torsos who opt for a one piece suit should look for high cut legs to elongate the legs and draw attention away from the torso. Short torsos can find extra help by wearing suit bottoms that sit low on the hips.

Small bust – A small bust gets a lift when a bathing suit ties around the neck. The adjustable tie allows for you to tighten as much as necessary to get a good fit. Also, many bathing suit tops come with built-in padding, a secret shaping trick for women with small busts.

Large bust – Proper support is key for women with large busts. Make sure to get a suit with enough Lycra to provide proper hold. Also look for thicker straps on suit tops and built in bras both of which can provide additional support. If you want to minimize a large bust, aim for a dark solid color.
