Recent studies show that more than 80 percent of women admit to having cellulite. Cellulite is caused by the tissue layers between cells becoming more fibrous, which results in fatty deposits under the skin giving a lumpy appearance in certain areas of the body. While cellulite affects nearly every woman, some very common misconceptions about this condition are prevalent. Sometimes it’s difficult to separate the myths from the reality.

Myth #1: Cellulite only happens to those that are overweight.

Reality: Cellulite affects everyone, regardless of weight. While it is more common in those that are overweight, it can be very troublesome for thin people too. There are a number of factors that can cause cellulite, including gender, age, the toxins building up in the body, poor circulation, and firmness of the skin.

Myth #2: Only women can get cellulite

Reality: While cellulite mainly affects women, men do get it. Women develop cellulite most often because the fat cells are shaped and stored and stored differently for women than in men. While cellulite occurs mainly in the abdomen, buttocks, breasts, and thighs in females, it can affect some men in the upper body areas, including the neck and abdomen. However, men have more muscle tone, which can reduce the appearance of cellulite.

Myth #3: Drinking certain beverages, such as soda and sparkling water can cause cellulite.

Reality: It was once believed that the sodium and carbonation found in sodas caused cellulite. This is not the case as there is no connection between soft drinks and cellulite that has been proven. Also, drinking sparkling water does not contribute to the appearance of cellulite. In fact, drinking lots of water will flush the toxins from your body that can cause the appearance of cellulite so it might a good idea to drink the recommended eight glasses of water a day as a way to reduce it.

Myth #5: Cellulite only affects older women.

Reality: While cellulite can worsen as you age, it does occur in younger women. It then becomes more noticeable as you age.

Myth #6 Liposuction will permanently get rid of unwanted cellulite.

Reality: This is not always true. While liposuction can be effective in removing fatty tissue, it doesn’t always remove cellulite. In some cases, it does improve the appearance of cellulite, but it can actually worsen its appearance in others. There is also the chance that the cellulite will recur.

While there are many myths surrounding cellulite and its causes this much is known. Cellulite can be somewhat impossible to get rid of completely. Adopting some healthy lifestyle habits might work in reducing its appearance. These include maintaining a healthy, low fat diet, paying particular attention to those areas most prone to cellulite when you exercise, as well as improving your muscle tone. Perhaps the most important thing of all though, it to understand that cellulite is a very common occurrence that affects nearly everyone, overweight, thin, young, and old. Being comfortable with your appearance is the most important thing of all.
