Cod liver oil has been used to supplement the diets of people in many communities for centuries. In the 1800s, cod liver oil was commonly used to treat and prevent rickets, which affected many children in that era. Through the years, cod liver oil has been used to treat and prevent heart disease, diabetes, cancer, depression, Alzheimer’s, and many other diseases.

Cod liver oil is derived from fatty fish. It contains vitamins A and D, as well as essential fatty acids EPA and DHA. Research has shown that these fatty acids are beneficial to the heart and the circulatory system. Cod liver oil acts as a natural blood thinner. Some evidence has even suggested that cod liver oil reduces cholesterol levels. The omega-3 fatty acids in cod liver oil can improve brain function, and can even be used in treatment for memory, learning, and behavioral disorders. These oils can work as lubricants, easing the stiffness in joints and alleviating the pain associated with arthritis. A body with sufficient levels of omega-3 fatty acids produces more energy and has an improved ability to concentrate. These fatty acids also provide greater resistence to common illnesses, such as colds and influenza.

Vitamin D is essential to good health, but the body cannot produce vitamin D on its own. Sun exposure can increase the body’s level of vitamin D. However, because of the increased risk of cancer, many people do not get the amount of exposure to the sun needed to produce the suggested amount of vitamin D. During the winter months, many people suffer from an even greater vitamin D deficiency. For this reason, cod liver oil is a beneficial supplement to most diets. The vitamin D in cod liver oil can strengthen bones and cartilage. It can also prevent multiple sclerosis, diabetes, and many types of cancer.

The vitamin A in cod liver oil is also essential. Vitamin A, also known as retinol, is commonly known to improve eyesight. Skin, hair, and nails can also benefit from healthy levels of vitamin A. Vitamin A can also strengthen bones and teeth, as well as provide immune system benefits.

The vitamins A and D in cod liver oil can be very beneficial, but be aware that excess vitamin A and vitamin D can actually cause damage to the body. Frequent exposure to the sun year-round means you probably do not need to supplement with vitamin D. Vitamin A is present in dark green vegetables, and in orange fruits and vegetables. If your diet contains a good amount of these foods, then it is probably unnecessary for you to supplement your diet with vitamin A. If you are unsure if you need a supplement of vitamins A or D, consult your doctor before taking cod liver oil. If you find that you do not need extra vitamin A or vitamin D, there are other fish oils on the market that are high in essential oils, but without the added vitamins.

There are contradicting opinions about whether or not cod liver oil should be taken during pregnancy. Some studies indicate that cod liver oil can aid in optimal brain development in the fetus. However, many doctors are unsure of any other effects that cod liver oil may have on the pregnant mother or unborn baby. If you are pregnant, talk to your doctor before taking cod liver oil.
