Visiting a day spa for a few hours or a complete day of treatments can be a relaxing or rejuvenating event. A successful and enjoyable visit can allow you to face the day with confidence or an entirely new attitude.

Most day spas are designed to take you away, if only for a few hours, from the hustle and bustle of your stressful world. Many spas are designed to represent a tranquil, quiet and serene location. Flattering lighting, well cushioned lounges, fountains, friendly and soft-spoken staff will greet clients and set the tone. Soft music, warm treatment rooms, privacy and plush robes and slippers will further enhance the get-away. Most day spas offer a large variety of treatments to suit the needs and desires of clients. Since reservations are usually required, inquiring and reviewing a day spa’s web site or speaking with the staff prior to a visit is recommended.

Before booking any treatment keep in the mind the following helpful hints. Inform spa staff of any medical or allergic conditions to avoid reactions to any products that may be used. Tell the staff member assigned to you what you expect from the treatment; whether relaxation, an introduction to the best skin care, rejuvenation, or something else is desired. Ask questions about the treatment and if anything feels wrong or uncomfortable, don’t be afraid to speak up. And, of course, be courteous and respectful to other clients and staff.

Spa treatments are grouped into sections; facials, nail care (both hands and feet), body treatments and massages. Each section will then have various treatments offered. Prices and time requirements are readily available for scheduling and budgetary reasons. Arrangements can be made for multiple treatments within a day. Staff members will assist with bookings and should have the knowledge to explain each treatment, making recommendations for the sequence of each treatment and their effectiveness.

Basic treatments are a great way to begin. A basic facial, will analyze your skin, cleanse and moisturize. Most therapists will recommend, though not push, products for your specific skin type and individual needs. Once you’ve determined your skin type and needs, other treatments, for your next visit, might be beneficial. Anything from moisturizing mud facials, cleansing peels or even learning the best makeup types and techniques is usually available. Frequently products used are available for purchase at the spa – a great way to continue that wonderful spa-fresh feeling.

Nail care basic treatments, for hands and feet, include cleaning, massage, cuticle removal and shaping of the nail. Nail tips or sets can be added to a basic package, as well as paraffin wax peels or polishes. This kind of treatment is great before a night on the town.

A variety of massages are offered in thirty to ninety minute sessions. The basic Swedish massage is meant to relax and de-stress, adding oils, aromatherapy and/or hot stones creates a unique feel to the Swedish massage results. Other varieties of massage, such as a sports massage for invigoration, a reflexology massage that concentrates on the nerve endings of the feet, a Shiatsu massage that concentrates on pressure points, or other specialty massages might fit your needs. Review the explanation of each type of massage and discuss your needed results before deciding upon a specific type. Many spas offer massages for couples, and some may even teach techniques, for that very romantic afternoon.

Body treatments are frequently offered in addition to massages. Most body treatments are to rejuvenate skin, exfoliate, moisturize and smooth the entire body. Many treatments include a type of wrapping of the body with seaweed, towels or clay to open pores, cleanse and refresh the skin. A shower or bath usually follows the treatment including a soothing oil or lotion. Though these treatments can be enjoyable and relaxing, they may not be recommended for those who suffer from claustrophobia or dislike being tightly tucked in.

Enjoying one or four treatments will depend on your time and budget. Either way be certain to bring along hair and makeup touch ups and drink plenty of water to aid in the hydration of your body. Remember this is your time, don’t rush, enjoy and inquire or request anything that will fulfill your treatment. Most staff members will be very accommodating.

With the large selection of treatments, for both men and women, a day at the spa can be beneficial to all.
