When dressing for a danceclub most places will advertise "Entry Refused Without Proper Attire". You may be required to wear a jacket or tie at some establishments. Be prepared and do a little research about the club before going out. Definite no-no's include shorts, sports attire, sandals (unless they have a small heel ladies), white tank tops, t-shirts, baseball hats, and please leave your old sneakers under the bed where they belong. Attire should be a little on the upscale. However, you don't need to go overboard and pull out the prom dress or tux you wore five years ago.
Ladies
Ladies, don't be afraid to experiment with your makeup. However, use colors that blend with your skin and do not over do it. If you think that Mimi from the Drew Carey Show has fabulous makeup than it might be time to take a class on how to properly apply it. If you plan on dancing a lot you'll probably sweat most of it off anyway so try to use waterproof products as much as possible. Lightly colored lip-gloss works best for a night out at a danceclub, as you don't have to make several trips to the overcrowded bathroom to reapply your lipstick all night. Keeping it simple seems to work best for most women.
For the warmer months consider a spaghetti-strap top, or maybe something cropped or backless if you feel you can pull it off. Not all of us dare to go bare. Try dusting exposed parts of your body with glitter to add just a hint of sparkle.
If you're wearing open-toed shoes, please get a pedicure as needed.
If all else fails, the old stand-by - a simple yet sexy black dress is always appropriate.
Gentlemen
Be sure that if you choose to wear facial hair it is well trimmed, neat, and even! Nothing turns a woman off faster than a man who doesn't pay attention to the little details.
Suits are always the way to go. However, a suit you would wear to work may not necessarily be good for the nightlife.
If you're not the suit-wearing type, a nice button-down shirt with dressy slacks, khakis, or darker-toned pants are good. Silk shirts are nice but keep in body heat like a sauna suit, so wearers beware. Remember to wear shoes that are comfortable, dark in color and clean.
A simple manicure never hurt anyone.
And my all time pet peeve, PLEASE do not put on white socks with dark colored shoes.
The old saying, "You shouldn't judge a book by its cover" does not always apply to the club scene. Ladies - leave a little to the imagination. I have had many men sit at my bar and voice that they often find that sexier. And for the men, often the gentlemanly direct approach with a simple smile is the best attire you can sport. Just always remember what you wear will determine who or what may be attracted to you and what they have in mind.
Fashionable Attire Head to Toe for All
Make sure your hair looks clean and groomed. Nothing looks worse than someone with bad hair. Whether you have straight hair, curls, a crew cut, dreads, an afro or a mohawk, make sure you use some gel or hairspray if called for and your locks are done right.
Shower, shower, shower. There is nothing more offensive than someone who has bad body odor and hasn't even danced one song yet. Use plenty of antiperspirant/deodorant combo. A little powder never hurt to help absorb sweat and smells from those other closely guarded areas of the body either.
Breath is often forgotten when making a fashionable appearance. Brush your teeth and gargle with mouthwash. Too often people fail to realize most bad breath comes from germs on your tongue so give that a hearty brushing too. Carrying mint or cinnamon gum is a big plus. The sugar in sweet drinks can often bring on the bad breath as well.
Anticipate getting hot from dancing. Wear fabrics that are sweat-friendly: rayon, nylon and polyester blends are good as they allow you to breathe and sweat doesn't stain as easily.
When it's cold outside, wear a sweater or long-sleeved jacket that can be taken off.
An absolute must is comfortable shoes for dancing the night away.
