A baby shower is a celebration of an impending birth, or a newly born baby, and it is the perfect excuse for friends and family to gather and forget the stress of daily life for a small amount of time, through good food and games!
Some games played at baby showers through the years have been reused to the point that some of us could participate in them blindfolded and bound, so our aim here is to offer up some new versions of old favorites and some totally brand new games, just like the baby the party is in celebration of!
Old is New
Instead of Baby Scramble, where you scramble up the names of baby items, such as cifparie-pacifier, scramble a list of words to help the new mother look ahead to her little one's teenage years!
Curfew - frcuwe
Homework - oemhrkwo
First date - stirf teda
Cheerleading - celhedgieran
Prom - rpmo
Steady - ysdtae
Yearbook - rbyoeako
Gray hair - ygar rahi
Cell phone - lcel opneh
Grounded - nderguod
Another old favorite is Cotton Ball Carry, where two bowls are placed next to each other, one of them filled with cotton balls (marshmallows work great too), the other empty. Each participant is blindfolded and given a spoon to scoop the cotton balls from one bowl to the other. Whoever transfers the most, in a set amount of time, is the winner. For a new variation of this time honored game, provide straws in place of spoons, and see how many in a set amount of time can be transferred by sucking on the straws, blindfold optional.
New Favorites
Diaper Bag Toss
This game takes a bit of pre-planning. When sending out the shower invitations, put in a note asking everyone to bring along a diaper bag size of wipes, teething toy, or similar 'small' item that belongs in a diaper bag. Make sure to include in the note, 'unbreakable items only'. At the shower, hang a diaper bag for everyone to try to toss their wipes or toy. Make sure to keep the game competitive by having the spot to toss from a realistic distance away. Have several small gifts on hand to award any guests that can make the shot. To make the game more of a challenge to complete, blindfold participants. When finished playing the game, the diaper bag and products will make a great final gift for the mother-to-be.
Words of Wisdom
More of an activity than a game, it is still a sure favorite among shower goers. Have each guest write down a few words of wisdom for the new parents on pre-cut scraps of paper. Do not let others see what each participant is writing. Once everyone has had a chance to write something, mix them all together in a small basket and have the mother-to-be randomly pick a few to read. AS she does, the first guest to guess who wrote that particular ‘wisdom’ wins a prize. No guessing of your own ‘wisdom’ allowed!
Door ‘SurPrize’
Door prizes are as ingrained a part of a baby shower as the games themselves. Make the next shower you help give a grand time for some, and some silly fun for other guests, by having a Door ‘SurPrize’. Wrap an assortment of small gifts, including gag gifts, and one main door prize gift. As guests arrive, allow them to each pick a gift. At the end of the shower, guests can open their selected gift to rounds of giggles and prizes.
